Autonomy of Sport Governance

10 July 2007
Charles Russell LLP, 8-10 New Fetter Lane, London EC4A 1RS

Introduction:

Questions of jurisdiction in Sports Governance are becoming increasingly fraught. Sporting federations are debating how strictly EU Law should apply to their rules and regulations, and are clashing with national governments over involvement in sports governance. With these increasingly bitter disputes in progress there is a definite need for legal clarity on the position of Sport in EU Law.

This Briefing will provide a unique opportunity for sports clubs, federations, governing bodies and advisors to discuss the cases and continuing developments in the debate surrounding the recognition of the specificity of sport.

We will examine the following:
Government involvement in sport, and sports position in EU Law
Progress Towards a Declaration on Sport
The Independent European Sport Review
Arbitration in Sport
Betting’s Relationship with Sport
