World Sports Law Report: Player Contracts

8 July 2008
Hammonds LLP, 7 Devonshire Square, London, EC2M 4YH

Introduction:

World Sports Law Report is organising a full day briefing on player contractual issues on 8 July. The briefing will be hosted by Hammonds at their London offices.

Issues over player contracts have never had a higher profile. Both FIFA and UEFA are using ‘integrity of sport’ arguments to justify restrictions on the number of overseas players that clubs can employ, despite the European Union’s freedom of movement laws. The new Indian and Caribbean cricket competitions are facing restrictions in signing players from national cricket boards keen to protect their own competitions.

While the Commission’s White Paper on Sport recognises sport’s need to protect its integrity, it also recognises case law and international agreements that have applied freedom of movement principles. The White Paper also highlights concerns regarding the protection of sport’s youth from player trafficking.
