The UK Court of Appeal (‘the Court’) upheld, on 27 March 2015, a High Court decision allowing UK users of the Apple Safari browser to bring a claim against Google Inc. in the US for breaching UK privacy law. The judgement also confirmed several developments in the interpretation of privacy law in the UK. / read more

The Joint Oversight Panel (‘the JOP’) published, on 1 April 2015, its findings report (‘the Report’), which favourably considered Canada’s application for participating in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Cross Border Privacy Rules System (APEC CBPRs). The application was submitted by the Canadian APEC Senior Official from Industry Canada, on 7 August 2014. Canada is the fourth country to join APEC CBPRs, following US, Mexico and Japan. / read more

The House of Representatives (HR) voted, on 22 April 2015, in favour of the Protecting Cyber Networks Act (PCNA), to encourage businesses to voluntarily share cyber threat information with the Federal Government by giving them liability protection. / read more


Losing a good friend is a sad and numbing experience, and Lindsey Greig's passing fits squarely in that description. Many of us who have been involved in privacy and data protection for some time and knew Lindsey, can hardly come to terms with the fact that the ever-energetic and jovial Lindsey has now left us. His contribution is still so alive and visible, that it is difficult to comprehend that he is no longer around us. Fortunately for all, there are many great memories that remain from his time with us and I thought that it would be appropriate to remember some of them in this journal that he and I founded over 11 years ago. / read more

A bill (‘the Bill’) to amend Japan’s Act on Protection of Personal Information (‘the Act’) was submitted to the Diet on 10 March 2015. When enacted, the amendments will significantly revise the Act and modernise Japanese regulation of handling personal information. Ryuichi Nozaki and Daniel C. Big Data is in the news again, and right on the doorstep of the insurance industry. In its business plan for 2015/16, released in February this year, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) made it clear that it intends to conduct a market study to ‘investigate how insurance firms use Big Data.’ The Association of British Insurers is at the very early stages of looking at a ‘Big Data’ code of practice, and insurers individually - as well as their channels to market, brokers and aggregators - need to be alive to what this FCA study could lead to if it were found that data is not being used appropriately. European Union (CJEU) held, on 24 March 2015, the first hearing in the case of Maximillian Schrems v. Irish Data Protection Commissioner and Digital Rights Ireland Limited (C- 362/14), in which questions were raised regarding the adequacy assessment for transfers of data towards third countries.
