Player Issues: Contracts & Regulations
1 July 2009 Hammonds LLP, London
Introduction:
Player Issues: Regulations and Contracts 2009
World Sports Law Report is organising the 2nd Annual Player Issues conference in association with sports law experts, Hammonds LLP.
The importance of reconciling the policy ideals of sporting governing bodies with the requirements of EU law has been brought into sharp focus recently given FIFA's attempts to gain approval for its '6+5' proposal, and the effect that the salary caps imposed by the Rugby Football Union are having on the movement of players within the EU.
Protection of minors remains a top priority for all sporting federations. Player Issues: Regulations and Contracts 2009 will examine how football clubs approach the identification of young talent, the regulations that are in place to prevent their exploitation, and the regulatory approach to compensating clubs in the event of the transfer of an amateur player.
Compensation for the early termination of contracts by players continues to be a very important issue for football clubs, particularly given the level of transfer fees and salaries in the current economic climate. Player Issues: Regulations and Contracts 2009 will look at how the landscape of compensation is likely to change following the decision of the CAS in Shakhtar Donetsk v Matuzalem.
Player Issues: Regulations and Contracts 2009 will examine;
- Doping in team sports and issues arising under the new WADA code
including the whereabouts rule
- Work permits & sport: the new regime
- Third party ownership of players in sport
- Payments to players: Salary caps, image rights and tax
- Identifying young talent and the international transfer of minors
- The legality of FIFA’s proposed '6+5' rule and the conflict of policy aims
with EC law
- Unauthorised events in sport: a case study in cricket
