The Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) is to proceed with its Presidential elections in November as planned, ignoring a court's rejection of its appeal against a Ministerial Order, issued by the Spanish government, dictating that national sport associations not involved with Beijing 2008 should hold their elections within the first three months of 2008. / read more

FIFA's Players' Status Committee has warned the Danish football association and FC Midtjylland that the systematic transfer of young Nigerian players to the SAS Ligaen club is in breach of Article 19.1 of FIFA's Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players. The recent judgment of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the Andrew Webster case led media commentators to predict the imminent collapse of the international football transfer system and Joseph Blatter, FIFA President, to describe the ruling as "very damaging". Mel Goldberg of Statham Gill Davies and Simon Pentol of 25 Bedford Row analyse the ruling arguing that in many ways, it is case specific and does no more than provide guidance in determining compensation due to clubs under Article 17 of the FIFA Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players, when players terminate contracts without just cause. / read more

The World Anti-Doping Agency operates the same penalties for performance enhancing drugs, such as steroids, as it does for 'recreational' drugs, such as cannabis or ecstasy. Paul Horvath, a solicitor with Paul Horvath Solicitors, explains how, in his view, WADA's strict liability punishments for performance enhancing and 'recreational' drug offences does not always tally with its aim of protecting athlete health, as in some cases rehabilitating a 'recreational' drug user may be more appropriate than banning them from sport. / read more
